Don Kangas

Donald Arne Kangas, 89, long time resident of Midland, died Feb. 15, 2018 at Sunrise of Wilmington in Delaware.

Donald was born on February 12, 1929, the son of the late Arne and Lila (Lampinen) Kangas, in Detroit Michigan. He married Sirkka Liisa Halinen on Dec. 18, 1954, in Toronto, Canada. Donald was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and a lover of the outdoors, dogs and birds. He had a B.S. in Chemistry from Michigan Technological University and an M.S. in Chemistry from Michigan State University. Donald served in the US Army at Fort Brag Kansas and was a research chemist at Dow Chemical Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1992. He was active in The Boy Scouts of America and was very passionate and active in the sport of speedskating: as president and coach in the Midland Speedskating Club, editor of the “Racing Blade”, and Chairman of the ASU coaching committee. Donald was inducted into the National Speed Skating Hall of Fame in 2001.
